General:
- Competition Method: 5 vs. 5 (Team Play, 5 players + 2 substitutes per team)
- Match Length: 2hrs 15mins (If game last more than 2hrs 15mins, WCG Committee/ Marshal will have the right to stop the game and make final decision of the winner through view of replay)
- Match Winner: The team who destroys the opponent’s throne/world tree first, or if the opponent surrender.
- Nationality Restriction: Only participants from Asia, Australia and New Zealand are allowed.
- During the whole tournament GG-Client is obligatory. The mandatory GG Client room of this tournament is the Leagues and Tournaments / War3 TFT RPG / Asian WCG Online League room.
- Hamachi or Battle.Net are optional - in case both teams agree. If a team does not have GG-Client, then the team with GG-Client has server advantage and may decide who hosts the game.
- Act mature and mannered both ingame and in the chat channels. Offending the administraton and/or participants of this tournament will result in punishments and might lead to a complete ban from the tournament and/or website.

- Version: 6.48b
- Game Mode: Group Stage - All Pick (-AP) / Single Elim. Stage - Extended League Mode (-XL)
- Game Speed: Fast

Kingsurf has taken 1st place in the ESWC qualifiers held at KS over the weekend.
In another competition held at Alibaba CC in Rawang over the same weekend, a mixed team including ppx and xiaoma also took top position.
In the GOA match played last night, Ks also won Zzz, playing the second round 4v5 after being denied a reload when Xiaogui dc-ed.
Unfortunately, replays are not currently available.

It lasted less than a week at the front page of MYM and much lesser on the Dota-Allstars forum. So I might as well post it up here. Hopefully it will be an eye opener for many out there.

Virtus.Pro and MYM out of Pride 10, some thoughts - Part 1

From the responses in all forums to date, Virtus Pro’s (VP) departure from Pride 10 seems to be raising much more attention than MYM’s loss to Kingsurf (KS). For me, the level attention is the other way around but that’s not the point of my post here. Below are my thoughts for both incidents.

Before we look into both cases, its might be worthwhile to understand the background of MYM tourneys. As Pride gets more popular with each edition, sponsors starts pouring in for a pot in the advertisement that Pride generates. With the title of the “largest Dota tournament in the world” more sponsors means higher prize pool which could only be great for pushing Dota into the realms of professionalism. However, the trade off for this is the sacrifice of the “fun” part in competitive Dota for the purist.

At my time as an admin of Pride, S1rro once mentioned the “goal” of our work is to make 1 Pride per month. As a purist myself, my first thought is of anger and confusion of what is the motive of pushing the teams and admins to its limits to reach such a goal. As a an admin who prefer to talk to participating teams rather than my bosses at MYM, its not really that hard to understand the stress facing the teams especially those who only has 5 in it while playing in Pride tourneys with its already tight 1.5 month per Pride deadline. This unrealistic goal for the current scene has 2 major problems:

1. The admins will not have time to properly review EVERY case of injustice and rule violations resulting in embarrassing decisions for the tournament. Ks being banned for map hack (and if it was not overturned, online competitive Dota) was a decision made within 3-4 days. And to the team, it is already considered a slow decision (I do not even want to begin with the details which I hope I can cover in posts to come). With such a huge case at hand, it is already considered slow by using 3-4 days due to the super tight schedule the admins themselves imposed on the tourney. One should wonder, how detail can future investigations goes if time itself is already an issue to ensure a fair judgement..

2. Teams unable to show up with full strength resulting in inferior players taking their place or worse, fake nicking to fulfill the tough demands of Pride. This second point can be illustrated in MYM and VP cases as bellows:

Vp seems unable to deny the fact that they smurfed 3 players in the recent match against x6. While I 100% agree on the punishment, the above factor comes to mind immediately when I first heard of the news. VP is no longer the team they once were at their peak with 6 players rotating without much effect on performance. With 2 new additions making it 5 players ONLY in the team, it is really ridiculous to expect all 5 will be free to play all Pride games with its super tight schedule. With only 5 players in the team, VP is an accident bound to happen.

For all we know, similar stunts could have been pulled off in the past with ease as the Russian scene is stacked with incredible talents of the game. Vp just “got caught” this time partly due to the obvious skill drop in the players they ask to smurf and partly due to the tighter control Pride has this time around.

With the insistence of having 5 players in a professional team now showing its limitations in this era, we shall take a look at how “the best managed team” MYM solve it at the next edition.

Bristleback + Shadow Priest : Free Farm FTW?

BB remains an imba hero to be picked but for a different reason than how it was first discovered by the Malaysian competitive scene around 6.43.

Odin’s Autosurf team was the first team to fully utilize this imbaness and developed a Sven+BB backdoor strat and won their first tourney along the way. In that version, it is definitely OK to hold the game as late as you want to and the BB will definitely owns as long as it gets farmed.

In the latest versions, there is a trend of Malaysian teams picking BB but suffered losses too resulting in BB not being banned and picked at all. However, claims by SK.Loda , widely considered one of the best player in the world that in the latest competition version, get a BB and a win is not far away. This is in sharp contrast with our present situation here in Malaysia, why?

Taking a look at some recent replays by top Western teams revealed that the key point is the shift in play style. The top teams of the West understands Icefrog’s wish to shorten the game after receiving tons of feedback from the community. Naturally, all the balances since then have incentives for teams to finish the game faster. Our favorite imba hero BB received some nerfs along the way too giving an impression of it being less useful than before.

However, a closer look at some recent bans and picks of top online teams shows that it can be played differently. Rather than allowing it to farm all game, the teams decided to use it as an early to mid game powerhouse hero. Pairing it with Shadow Priest in a lane really is a pain to go up against. BB’s spray and SP’s early heal+damage makes that lane virtually a perfect lane to farm for BB no matter the opposition. The real pain comes when SP hits level 6. Its Ankh ultimate which basically guarantees BB 0 gold penalty on every death makes BB and even unstoppable hero at the farming department. Evasive moves that will slow down farming that should be avoided by the BB will be ignored with Ankh on it.

As the game goes on, a BB with a decent farming skill should be able to have a Hood and Radiance within 30 mins of the game. With an Ankh on it, it can basically lead a push and tank all spells while the BB’s teammates will come in and clear all oppositions without any spells resulting in a skirmish win. The BB might die in this combat but the team will win the engagement and with ankh the BB really have nothing to lose but all to gain as quick revival enable him to farm the next lane and speed up the pushing process.

The current Malaysian Dota trend tends to forget about BB and sometimes almost never picks it. Why international dota does deem BB to be imba but for us Malaysian it’s just filler? I personally think BB is still a very very good hero if used correctly in a appropriate draft plan. Not to mention the lane BB is in almost never loses as it is such a good lane control hero.

To put it bluntly, drafters like Loda , Maelk and Jolie will not ban / draft with no reason. There is of course an important reason for the so called “top western teams” to keep on banning SP and BB in their matches lately. Hopefully we can see more of BB picks or bans for tourneys to come and perhaps some surprises with this draft =).
